Course Syllabus for                                                   Arnett-- Room 202
Introduction to Computers and the Internet

This course is for students who want to become computer literate. It is designed to develop computer skills necessary for college and beyond. The main objectives of this course are to utilize software packages for word processing, spreadsheets, slide presentations, graphics, multimedia, and converting file types; operate two computer systems Mac and Windows for the PC; design a web page for the World Wide Web; and access the Internet to retrieve information and make use of various Internet tools.

The following topics are covered in the course:
Section I: PC - Windows and Application Programs

Unit 1. Introduction to Microsoft Windows; working with basic commands and the File System
Unit  2. Windows Applications

Unit 3. Creating graphics and Multimedia
Unit  4. Word processing with Microsoft Word
Unit  5. Creating slide presentations - Microsoft PowerPoint
Unit  6. Working with spreadsheets - Microsoft Excel

Section II: Internet and Web Applications


Unit  7.  HTML Editors: Building a Home Page with Microsoft Word and Front Page
Unit  8. Introduction to e-mail.
Unit  9. Connecting to Remote Computers with Telnet and SSH
Unit  10. Transferring Files on the Internet with FTP
Unit  11. News Groups and News Readers

Virtually all work in Computer Introduction  is done electronically, (very few paper assignments). The assignments generally take the form of projects that may last several days up to several weeks. Every student will be given opportunities to submit PRE-APPROVED extra credit or bonus work. Your final grade will come from the following breakdown (percentages are approximate):

  • Attendance and participation 15%

  • Projects 60%

  • Unit Tests 20%

  • Bonus opportunities 5%

  • A = 90 - 105%

  • B+ =87- 89

  • B =80 - 87

  • C+ =77- 79

  • C =70 - 77

  • D+ =67- 69

  • D =60 - 67

  • E = below 60 %
